Abstract: Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a foodborne pathogen that causes disease in humans. It was first recognized as a human pathogen following an outbreak of hemorrhagic colitis associated with the consumption of undercooked ground beef in 1982. There have been several reports of E. coli O157: H7-related outbreaks throughout the world especially developing countries such as Nigeria.Food-borne pathogenassociated with E. coli 0157:H7 outbreaks is still being reported as the cause of hospitalizations and deathsdespite advances in food sanitation techniques and pathogen surveillance in developed countries. A promising approach that addresses most of these challenges is bacteriophage biocontrol, a natural and green method that uses lytic bacteriophages isolated from the environment to selectively target and eliminate pathogenic bacteriaor reduce their levels in foods.
