Abstract: Each year, over three million deaths worldwide are tied directly to diabetes and even greater number die from cardiovascular disease. Modification in lifestyle and proper medication can delay and prevent cardiovascular diseases in high-risk groups. Eating whole grain carbohydrates and moderate exercise and avoiding excessive weight gain could eliminate over eighty per cent of cardiovascular diseases. The SITE study, sponsored by a multinational pharmaceutical company, Sanofi, tested almost 16,000 people living in urban cities across eight states over the last three years. It concluded that one in every five Indian adults living in urban cities suffers from hypertension and diabetes. Your blood pressure is the force exerted on your artery walls by the blood flowing through your body. A blood pressure reading provides two measures: Systolic Pressure and Diastolic Pressure .Both are expressed as millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).Systolic pressure is measured as the heart pumps. Diastolic pressure is measured between beats, as blood flows back into the heart. High blood pressure is often called the "silent killer" because it has no symptoms and can go undetected for years. It is important to have your blood pressure checked regularly. Dietary fiber (alternate names: roughage, bulk, diet-fiber) is a complex of substances of cell walls of plants which are not digested and not absorbed in a human's digestive tract. There are two major kind of dietary fibers Insoluble and Soluble type. Soluble and insoluble fiber act in totally different ways. Eating whole grain carbohydrates and moderate exercise and avoiding excessive weight gain could eliminate over eighty per cent of cardiovascular disease. This study is a clinical Trial with 40 non-smoker Patients which had no renal and liver disorder. The patients were selected through questionnaire data collection method, by ways of various health care camps organized in the city. They were randomly divided into 2 groups; the first group was given 30-45 grams of dietary fibers per day (intervention group). The control group remained normal with no additional dietary supplements. All the groups were observed for a period of2 years. Lipid parameters viz. HDL, LDL, TOTAL CHOLESTROL, TG was measured every year during the study for each group.Mean and SD were calculated. The significance of differences in the means of intervention group and control group were found using t test both paired and unpaired.

Title	:	Determination of Maximum Herbaceous Production in Anyigba, a Derived Savanna

Abstract :In this investigation, an attempt was made to estimate the herbaceous production or the carrying capacity of the derived Savanna vegetation of Anyigba area, Kogi State, Nigeria. Three plots of a hectare each were randomly marked out. Within the 3 plots (burnt, slashed and standing/control), 30 tussocks each were marked out and pegged for weekly observations of new flush or tiller regeneration for a period of six months. By random sampling, monthly fresh weights of herbaceous materials in a 1m2 quadrat were clipped and weighed with a spring balance in the field and oven dried to obtain the dry weights of the herbaceous materials. There was significant difference in herbaceous production between the plots. There was significant difference in tiller regeneration between the plots. Tiller regeneration was adduced to be responsible for corresponding herbaceous production. The implications of these in a derived savanna were discussed.

Title	:	The anti-osteoporotic effect of Moringa oliefera on osteoblastic cells: SaOS 2

Abstract : M.oliefera oliefera (MO) is a middle-sized tree, cultivated throughout India. It is a multipurpose tree, used as a vegetable, spice, a source of cooking and cosmetic oil and as a medicinal plant. It is reported to contain alkaloids, flavonoids, anthocyanins. It possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antihyperlipidaemic, antifertility and anticancer activities. An in-vivo study in our laboratory has proved the osteoprotective potential of the plant. In the present study an attempt is made to explore the osteoblastogenic potential of the different parts of the plant on the osteoblast cell line SaOS2. Methanolic extracts of MO components showed a positive effect, and of all the three components, flower and fruit were found to have significant osteoblast stimulating property. Flower extract was found to be increasing the number of osteoblastic cells; while the fruit extract was having more elaborative effect as it increased ALP activity, induced bone formation, increased hydroxyproline content and bone mineral formation. In conclusion, Methanolic Extact of MO on SaOS2 cell line affirmed the beneficial effects and thus indicates its potential in preventing osteoporosis.

Title	:	Epidural Tramadol with low dose local anaesthetics for anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia in NYHA class III orthopaedic patients – A prospective randomized controlled study

Abstract : Aims & Objectives: 1.To assess the effect of epidural Tramadol with low dose local anaesthetics on quality of anaesthesia, postoperative analgesia, haemodynamic stability, and outcome in patients undergoing major orthopaedic surgeries on lower limb. Patients & Method: One hundred & seventy NYHA class III patients (age >60 yr) posted for major orthopaedic surgery on lower limbs during 1st July 2007 to 31st July 2010 were selected for the study. They were randomized into control (group A) & study group (group B). Group A received sixteen ml of an equal mixture of 1% Xylocaine and 0.25% Bupivacaine while Group B received Tramadol 50 mg in addition to the mixture of LAs epidurally. Inadequate level of sensory block necessitated further supplementation with 5 ml of 0.25% Bupivalocaine. For postoperative analgesia, group A received 5cc 0.125% (10 mg) Bupivacaine while group B received 5cc (50 mg) Tramadol.Anaesthetic, haemodynamic effects, pain scores, blood pressure, respiratory rate, side effects, complications and level of satisfaction were monitored for 72 hours. Adequacy of postoperative pain relief was judged by VAS. Statistical analyses were done by mean ± standard deviation. Correlation was examined with Pearson correlation coefficients (significance assumed with p < 0.05).
